Frequently Asked Questions | WIP

Is the library haunted?

While not widely known for paranormal activity, our staff are about 50/50 on supernatural happenings at the library. However, we can neither confirm nor deny signs of symmetrical book stacking. Feel free to ask us though, you may hear an eerie tale or two, especially in our Genealogy Department!

What do I need in order to get a library card?

Cards are completely free for all Shelby County residents. You will just need to present a valid photo ID with your current address. If your address is incorrect we need a piece of mail with your address on it. We're sure this will be the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

Can I get a card if I don't live in Shelby County?

Don't live in Shelby County? Well, frankly my dear... we can still get you a card!

A person who lives outside of Shelby County may apply for a $45.00 nonresidential card for use of material from this library and any other Evergreen Library (complete listing of Evergreen Libraries). Anyone is also eligible to apply for a Public Library Access Card (PLAC) which enables individuals to use any public library in the state of Indiana for $70.00.

Approved photo ID and proof of current local address must be shown to apply for PLAC and nonresidential cards. PLAC cards are only available to individuals with a valid home library card from within the state of Indiana. Both types of cards must be renewed every year.

What is Evergreen Indiana?

Evergreen Indiana is a growing consortium of more than 100 public, school, and institutional libraries located throughout Indiana that ramps up your selection to 11. Patrons of member libraries can use their Evergreen Indiana library card to view the catalogs, borrow and return materials, and request items through their home library from the other member libraries.

Libby says my library card and/or PIN are invalid. What do I do?

Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, your library card can expire. Every 2 years to be exact. Renewing it is a cinch though! You can come in to any branch or give us a call and we can get you back to borrowing once again. We just need to verify your address and phone number and you're all set!

Your PIN can be reset the same way, we'll just need to verify that's it's really you.

If Libby is still giving you a headache, please make sure you are trying to gain access to Shelby County Public Library, Indiana; not Tennessee. Libby likes to be mischievious like that sometimes.

I want to borrow an item but no one in Evergreen has it! Am I just out of luck?

No, not necessarily. We can try finding your item outside of Evergreen via Indiana Share or you can request that we purchase this item for our collection! Please note, we do not guarantee that we will purchase all items that are requested for our collection.  However, if you request it, there is a strong chance it will come.

Do you have any cool stats to share?

Do you like stats? Well, we have the numbers so how do you like these stats?

Shelby County Library 2024 stats: 85k e-checkouts, 90k+ items, 8,552 cardholders, 73k visits, 10k interlibrary items, 165k circulations, 1,100 programs.

Wait, did you really sneak movie quote references into each FAQ to see if I really read them?

As if! Well, maybe. Did you find them all? Not a prize on the line per se, just cool points*.

*Cool points may be redeemed for 1 free checkout with a valid library card at participating locations.
