  • The Horizon Center / Shelby Senior Services 1504 S Harrison St Shelbyville, IN, 46176 United States (map)

Join us for the library's book discussion group at the Horizon Center!

This discussion group meets on the fourth Thursday of most months. At this meeting, we will be discussing THE MAN WHO INVENTED CHRISTMAS by Les Standiford. Books are available by the library's main circulation desk. (**We will show the movie based on this novel at the library’s annex on Fri., Nov. 16 at 1pm! Everyone is free to join us!)

As uplifting as the tale of Scrooge itself, this is the story of how one writer and one book revived the signal holiday of the Western world.

Just before Christmas in 1843, a debt-ridden and dispirited Charles Dickens wrote a small book he hoped would keep his creditors at bay. His publisher turned it down, so Dickens used what little money he had to put out A Christmas Carol himself. He worried it might be the end of his career as a novelist....

Pam Weakley, Outreach Department Head, will lead the discussion. Questions? (317) 398-7121 ext. 239 or pweakley@sscpl.lib.in.us.
