Why does the library need to raise additional funds?
The funding that the library receives through property taxes covers approximately 60-65% of our budget. Additional funding is provided through fines, copies, memorials, donations, grants, and contributions made to the Friends of the Library and the Shelby County Public Library Foundation.
What are our current needs?
The library is specifically raising funds to repair the roof in the main Carnegie Library and to complete renovation on the library's Carnegie East Wing. Our goal is to raise $110,000 to help cover the expenses of these projects. This coincides with the 110th anniversary of the library.
How can you get involved?
*SHOW YOUR SUPPORT The library is one of five finalists for the Blue River Community Foundation Impact Grant. Tell us why you love the Genealogy & History department or share any fond memories that you have from the library. We'll include an online testimony page and display them at the library's 110th birthday party. Thoughts can be emailed here.
*HANG $10! A card thanking you or honoring a loved one will be hung in the library for every $10.00 that is donated.
*$100+ Donations Individuals or businesses who donate $100.00, $250.00, or more will be recognized on a plaque in the new part of the building.
*ICE CREAM SOCIAL The library is celebrating its 110th birthday and kicking off the 2013 summer reading season with an ice cream social on Monday, June 3. Stop by the library anytime between 3-6pm to sign up for summer reading, get ice cream, listen to WSVX, and enjoy the children’s activities including a bounce house. Ronald McDonald will be giving a show with magic tricks at 3pm in the library’s Carnegie East Wing. This show will fill on a first come, first serve basis. The Kurt Vonnegut Memorial Library’s traveling exhibit will be on display inside the library. This is a free event and open to the public. Free will donations will be accepted for renovation at the library’s annex, the Carnegie East Wing. Bake sale items will be sold to raise funds for our youth department’s educational resources. The Shelby County Democrats will be hosting a book sale at the event to donate proceeds to the library. This event will take place rain or shine.
All donations are tax deductible and can be mailed to the following address:
